SOCA St. Herman of Alaska Brotherhood The St. Herman of Alaska Brotherhood is a monastic brotherhood of the Serbian Orthodox Church in North and South America. It currently has at least 5 affiliated monasteries:
St. Herman of Alaska Serbian Orthodox Monastery in Platina California;
St. Nilus Serbian Orthodox Skete in Ouzinkie, Alaska;
St. Archangel Michael Serbian Orthodox Skete in Ouzinkie, Alaska;
St. Xenia Serbian Orthodox Skete in Wildwood, California; and
Holy Resurrection Serbian Orthodox Skete in Fallbrook, California.
St. Paisius Serbian Orthodox Monastery in Safford, Arizona, was affiliated with this group at one time. However, Pokrov.org has been told by someone who should be in a position to know that the monastery severed its connection to the brotherhood in 2000, around the same time it joined the SOCA. This monastery *is* listed separately from those groups still affiliated with the brotherhood on the website of the Western American Diocese. The brotherhood was founded by Father Seraphim Rose and Father Herman Podmoshensky under the auspices of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russian (ROCOR) in the 1960s.
However, after the death of Rose in 1982, Podmoshensky was accused of serious moral charges and suspended from the priesthood. When he continued to serve while under suspension, ROCOR defrocked him in 1988.
Podmoshensky then aligned himself with the Archdiocese of Vasiloupolis. Most of the ROCOR monks and nuns departed for other ROCOR monasteries at this time. The decimated monastic ranks were repeopled by men and women from the Holy Order of MANS.
After Podmoshensky was removed as abbot in 2000, the brotherhood joined the SOCA.
